Nick Kelsh: Making Everyday Moments Special

A veteran of nine photography books, Nick Kelsh offers photo guidance to the masses in a very appealing, reader-friendly manner, has provided beautiful nature images for a new edition of Rachel Carson’s classic The Sense of Wonder, and has traveled far and wide to shoot compelling photographs for the A Day in the Life book series. His images have appeared in Time, Life, National Geographic, and Business Week.

His most recent book, How to Photograph Your Life, was photographed entirely with a consumer-level digital camera and gives easy-to-follow tips on taking great pictures with amateur equipment. To illustrate this book, Kelsh photographed his own life in order to help people portray theirs.

Kelsh is also principal/photographer of Kelsh Wilson Design, a partnership of writers, photographers and graphic designers. “We design brochures and ‘view’ books for schools,” he says, in addition to designing, photographing and producing promotional materials and Websites for corporations and other businesses.

Turning Ideas Into Books
Although creating photography books is an important aspect of Kelsh’s career, he says that the first one came about as sort of an accident. About seven years ago, “I was surrounded by people having babies, and they brought them all to the office.” At the parents’ urging, he took some “artsy” pictures of these infants. People were very impressed with the results, and someone suggested that he do a photography book with Pulitzer prize-winning author Anna Quindlen.

Once he got Quindlen’s attention, he convinced her to look at his photos. She loved them, and wrote some beautiful essays on babies to accompany Kelsh’s images. This collaboration resulted in Naked Babies, Kelsh’s first book that celebrates children, followed by Siblings (which he also did with Quindlen). Kelsh laughs at the memory of being on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to promote Naked Babies. “I was crawling around on stage, taking baby pictures.”

Kelsh’s books have proven to be very popular. His how-to guide, How to Photograph Your Baby: Getting Closer with Your Camera and Your Heart, was published about four years ago and is still a best-seller. He has also written and photographed How to Photograph Your Family, How to be Santa Claus and How to be Dad. “I don’t bog people down with shutter speeds and f-stops,” explains Kelsh. He has three basic rules for amateurs: 1. Get closer, either by zooming in with your lens or standing closer; 2. Take a lot of pictures—don’t limit yourself to just a few of important situations; and 3) Don’t use the camera’s built-in flash. It just creates harsh, unnatural light. Of this last tip, Kelsh says, “It’s best to use natural light that comes through doors and windows.”

He demonstrates this use of natural light in How to Photograph Your Life, which he shot entirely with the digital Olympus C-5050. This idea came about after he had taken pictures for A Day in the Life of Africa with one of Olympus’ professional digital models, the E-20. The company gave Kelsh the compact C-5050 “just as a backup,” and he gave it to his wife.

But when she asked him to teach her how to use the camera, “It dawned on me that this was a book idea—to teach amateurs how to work with good amateur equipment.” Kelsh divides How to Photograph Your Life into brief chapters—or rather, occasions—which apply to nearly everyone. There’s a mediocre photo (which is run small), on the left page of each chapter with brief, instructional text, with a larger example of how to do it right on the right page. “I went down the list of 48 common subjects and occasions that most people photograph: landscapes, a family meeting a new baby, the best way to portray Christmas, and even something to sell on eBay.”

“Amateur photographers need to realize is that good light is so important.” He adds, “People should also have fun with photography. Digital imaging, in particular, has made it a lot of fun.”

A Brush With Death
As an eighth grader in Fargo, North Dakota, Kelsh already knew he wanted to be a photographer. One day a photojournalist from a local newspaper came to speak to Kelsh’s science class, and during the course of his speech, the photographer processed some negatives in a light bag. Kelsh was fascinated, and promptly bought some photography and darkroom equipment at a rummage sale. His first camera was a Mamiya/Sekor 500 SLR that he bought with “paper route money.” He later taught himself how to use the darkroom when he attended the University of Missouri as a photojournalism major.

Kelsh recalls that in college, “I wanted to be a war photographer, and decided that Northern Ireland would be the safest bet,” primarily because it was an English-speaking country. He corresponded with some Irish newspapers, and the photo editor of “the largest paper in Belfast” invited him to be an intern. “It was the most amazing experience,” he says. “Most of the paper’s staff wanted nothing to do with the ‘troubles’ in Ireland, but the photo editor took me under his wing and sent me out on assignment.” One night, however, Kelsh and the editor’s family were held captive. Luckily, despite this highly dangerous situation, they were all released, but the newspaper’s publisher sent Kelsh home the following day.

Prior to this incident, Kelsh did a personal project on photographing children in Ireland; the offspring of people who got killed in the “troubles.” He remembers being brave enough to go into bad neighborhoods and knocking on doors. “I was 19,” he says. “People were friendly because I was young, and Irish people love Americans.” When he came home, he got these images published in a magazine called Camera 35. He says, “The piece was called something like ‘Faces of Death.’”

Inventing Himself
Kelsh interned at National Geographic while in college, but states, “I didn’t actively seek out magazine work like some of my colleagues.” Although he’s worked for several newspapers as a photojournalist, he says, “I’m happy about the way things have played out with my books.” Many of his friends travel “about 275 days out of the year,” while Kelsh’s work allows him to stay closer to home and family. In terms of his work, Kelsh has truly invented himself. “I don’t want to be on the road that much. That’s why doing these books has been great—my subjects are neighbors, friends and relatives.”

One of his books features some beautiful nature images with writings by the late Rachel Carson. Kelsh says that Carson, who wrote about environmental issues in books such as Silent Spring, “believed that saving nature was the key to our salvation.” He discovered one of her books in a used book store, and decided he wanted to work on a new edition of her book, The Sense of Wonder. He tracked down her former editor and publisher, and presented his idea for the book, which included colorful photos of nature alongside images of children enjoying the outdoors. He discovered in one of her old letters that, coincidentally, this had been her vision too: “I accidently did the book that Rachel would have wanted.”

Lightening His Load
In terms of equipment, Kelsh says, “I’ve owned all kinds of cameras.” But he says that he’s really having fun with the lightweight, five-megapixel Olympus C-5050, which he always carries with him. He enjoys using the custom mode (“my mode”), and shoots RAW files. “The quality of the pictures is so sweet, and the camera is so small, it’s great to have terrific technology like this at my fingertips.”

At one time, he used to travel with an assistant and “tons” of equipment. Today, he says, his cache is smaller except for some heavy lighting equipment, which he carries on a self-made “death cart.” Kelsh also shoots with the Olympus E-20 and uses a camera belt. “I can go out with my camera, belt and cart, and do some great things.” These items make life a lot easier, he muses. “Fun is a big deal with me. If something isn’t fun, I don’t want to do it.”

He’s also experimented with Piezography, an archival black-and-white ink technology. By utilizing it, he says, you can create high-quality, “Ansel Adams-type” prints. His latest printer is an Epson Stylus Photo 1280, and he plans to buy an Epson Stylus Pro 9600, “to make prints as large as 4x6 feet.”

Kelsh says that he optimizes his photos on the computer as he once did in the darkroom, but not in an extreme way. “It’s just so wonderful to make a great print and to be able to repeat it.”

Wisdom to Live By
Kelsh says that his philosophy has been greatly shaped by two very influential photographers. The first was Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, who came to speak to Kelsh’s college class. “One of my fellow students asked, ‘Do you have any advice for young photographers?’ ‘Yes,’ Eisenstaedt replied. ‘Get out of the car.’”

The second was Elliott Erwitt, who commented, “I studied what other photographers do and I would do the opposite.” Kelsh says, “When I find myself in a sea of photographers, I always follow this advice.”

Every day is same?

Making Every Day a Special Day by CD Mohatta

The same sun, the same sky, the same home, and the same routine. Life is boring. Every day is same. How to carry on from day to day? Why does a week not have seven Sundays? Don't you find yourself saying - 'I want to enjoy life. I am getting bored with my schedule that never changes. There is no excitement in my life.' Ask few friends around their life and they will say something similar. Why is life becoming a bore for them and how to make it exciting?

Can one escape work? No sensible person can? Can a parent stop caring for his/her children? No. Can an executive stop taking decisions? No. Then how to make life exciting? There must be some way. Yes, there is a way and it is very simple. Just look out of your window and watch the sky. Do you observe any clouds? Look at them. Look at the different shapes? Who made them? From where did they arrive and where will they go? Look at some flowers in your home. Observe the symmetry. Touch and feel the softness. How lovely! We are surrounded by treasures, but we have no time to look at them. A child's smile can make today a different day than any other day. Try to make a child smile and feel the joy.

Look at the night sky. Observe the stars and think about the distances. Some are so far away that it takes light, hundreds of years to reach us. How many millions of years you will take to walk and reach them? What is beyond them? Observe, think and get excited. Life need never be dull for any of us. Take another example. While sitting on your table, have you ever wondered about the wood that was used to make it? Have you thought about the life of the tree? A small seed grew into a gigantic tree. How exciting. What of the tar on the road? It comes from deep inside the earth, goes to refineries and is laid on the roads. How deep must the oil well have been? How did they locate the oil and what will happen after we finish all the oil?

The world is full of objects that can make us think and wonder. It is our attitude that makes our life. If we adopt a child-like attitude towards things, we will bring joy back in life. I am not asking you to give up your work and enjoy. But find time during the day to look at things and wonder. Bring joy back in your life. You can begin right now. Look at your screen. What happens to the text after you shut down your computers? Where do they all go, when you close the browser? Isn't life full of excitement? Live it.

MSN MESSENGER
